The Council covers all aspects of research aimed at fundamental scientific issues within natural sciences, computer science and mathematics.
The Council allocates research grants to researchers working within natural sciences, computer science and mathematics with a cognition-related, but not necessarily practical aim. Furthermore, the Council provides scientific advice within the areas of natural sciences, computer science and mathematics. Advice is given according to request or on the Council's own initiative.
The Danish Council for Independent Research annually publishes a call inviting researchers to apply for funding for research activities within the scientific areas of the Council. The call includes information about requirements and guidelines for applications to The Danish Council for Independent Research | Natural Sciences.
The Council's 15 members are acknowledged researchers appointed by the Minister for Science, Innovation and Higher Education in their own personal capacity.
