Broad agreements on millions for research and innovation

Two broadly supported agreements have been reached on the allocation of DKK 859 million in 2014 to research activities and significant ventures in the large new Danish National Innovation Foundation.

On 31 October, the Danish government reached two broad agreements on a total of DKK 859 million from the research reserve.

The agreements entail support for research in selected areas, as well as implementing a number of large scale initiatives under the auspices of the new Danish National Innovation Foundation. Furthermore, independent research will be given a boost, including a targeted effort to ensure better gender equality in Danish research environments.

The Danish government, together with political parties Venstre (the Danish Liberal Party), Dansk Folkeparti (the Danish People’s Party), Enhedslisten (the Red-Green Alliance), and Det Konservative Folkeparti (the Conservative People’s Party) have reached agreement on the allocation of DKK 678 million from the research reserve in 2014 to cross-cutting research initiatives as well as the Danish National Innovation Foundation being charged with initiating five large societal partnerships.

The government and political parties Venstre, Det Konservative Folkeparti and Liberal Alliance – the parties behind the 2012 disability pension/flex job agreement – have also agreed to allocate DKK 181 million to research and development activities.

Minister for Science, Innovation and Higher Education Morten Østergaard is please that, to a great extent, broad agreement on the allocation has been achieved.

- With these agreements, we strengthen the foundation for independent research and take the first steps in the direction of making our ideas and ambitions about the Danish National Innovation Foundation a reality. Relatively speaking, we are among the top countries in the world that invest the most public funds in research and development, but we must improve how we translate our knowledge to solutions and growth. This Finance Act helps pave the way for finding answers to concrete societal challenges, which also present enormous opportunities for creating new jobs in Denmark to replace many of those that have been lost, says Morten Østergaard.

- We have chosen to take an important step towards gender equality within Danish research. There are too few female professors and we have many talented women who need a little nudge forward. This agreement provides such a thing for them, says Mette Reissmann.

Research spokesperson Jonas Dahl (SF):

- The Socialistisk Folkeparti (the Socialist People’s Party) is particularly pleased that we will see increased psychiatric research and a boost for clinical research. But I also believe that it is worth highlighting that we have secured funds for research into how we can reduce the congestion and environmental impact in the transport sector, says Jonas Dahl.

Research spokesperson Pernille Skipper (EL):

- It has been important for Enhedslisten (the Red-Green Alliance) for the research funds to have a green imprint – for example by the extra-large focus on organic food research as well as the strengthening of independent research. A number of important steps have been taken within the research area with this agreement, says Pernille Skipper.
